The Open Apparel Registry (OAR) is a free and open data tool mapping garment facilities worldwide and allocating a unique ID to each. The tool is used by stakeholders across the apparel sector to eliminate confusion and facilitate collaboration, enable interoperability across systems and tackle the long-standing industry problem of facility identification. The OAR is currently at an exciting period in its growth and development and is looking for a DevOps Engineer to contribute to the implementation and maintenance of an open data, geospatial tool within the context of a rapidly expanding global nonprofit. Our ideal candidate is mission driven with a desire to use their development skills to democratize global supply chain data and accelerate the progress towards addressing intractable issues that exist in supply chains - issues like modern day slavery and environmental degradation. Successful applicants will have the opportunity to contribute to the future growth and vision for the tool and must be prepared to “get their hands dirty” with a wide variety of tasks. We are scaling quickly and will be hiring new team members throughout 2022.

Job Description

The OAR’s DevOps Engineer will oversee and be accountable for development of the OAR’s web application, mapping tool, and underlying database. The DevOps Engineer will work closely with the OAR’s leadership team, product team, and contracted technical provider to:

  1. Provide leadership in developing an infrastructure and deployment strategy to scale our current platform from an apparel-specific web application and database with over 80,000 facilities to a broader range of global retail supply chains, with the potential to identify millions of production and manufacturing facilities.
  2. Balance the immediate need of scaling the platform with the strategic need to position the organization as core infrastructure within the supply chain transparency / ESG ecosystem.

The position is remote, but we ask that the employee be located in the US, or be willing to align their work schedule to partially overlap with US Eastern business hours. This position can be hired as a full-time employee or as a consultancy. If full-time, benefits include medical and vision insurance and a generous parental leave and vacation policy. The OAR is a lean organization with an entirely remote staff base; this position may require travel for occasional regional meetings or annual retreats with global staff.

Responsibilities

  • Leadership and oversight on infrastructure, deployment, and maintenance of OAR’s existing web platform as well as the strategic evolution to the next generation platform.
  • Build and leverage reporting dashboards that incorporate system health, site performance, and traffic in order to monitor system status and inform technical and product roadmap.
  • Identify gaps and needs where processes and systems could be made more efficient.
  • Collaborate with other technical staff and product team on the development of system requirements and acceptance criteria; bring technical perspective of what is possible and what tradeoffs exist between different technical options or feature designs.
  • Ability to define engineering tasks accurately and ensure scalable, robust, efficient, and easily maintainable systems.
  • Oversee documentation of all deployment practices and platform infrastructure, as you work with other functions of the team (architecture, security, engineering, etc.) to deploy scalable and high-quality solutions.
  • Work with the engineering team to improve code integration and deployment cycles.
  • Work with OAR management and QA to improve overall quality protocols and application testing.

The Ideal Candidate

  • A mid- to senior-level DevOps engineer with 7+ year of software engineering experience, including contributions to architecture design, implementation, and maintenance of new and current systems.
  • You have experience in a high growth, consumer or SaaS company and understand what it takes to build high performing data products. Bonus points if you have experience with GIS, ESG, or GHG accounting data or platforms.
  • You bring a solid understanding of infrastructure design, including the operational trade-offs of various designs.
  • You are experienced with modern infrastructure tools such as Docker, Terraform, Jenkins, etc. and with modern CI/CD practices and build systems, such as GitLab CI/CD, GitHub Actions.
  • You have an interest in the complexity and nuances of global supply chains and are motivated to dig in and understand how open data can be leveraged to combat intractable issues that persist within them - issues like modern day slavery and environmental degradation.
  • You are excited about OAR’s mission, opportunities for growth and potential impact; you are an advocate for the power of open data.
  • You are open to a pro-feedback, pro-fun, mission driven and global workplace culture.

Must have:

  • Mastery of multi-disciplinary software roles: architecture, security, DevOps, etc.
  • Experience creating KPIs and overall evaluation criterion & monitoring/tracking successfully
  • Production environment experience for large and/or global user base

Nice to have:

  • Experience working with supply chain/ESG/GHG data
  • Experience with geospatial data
  • Experience in a social enterprise, B Corp or nonprofit
