Contribute and search by five new data points on the Open Apparel Registry

The OAR is expanding standardized supply chain disclosure in the apparel sector. Here’s how.

Since our launch in 2019, the Open Apparel Registry has been focused on collecting, standardizing and opening up name and address data for the world’s apparel facilities. Along the way, users have shared that adding additional data points could make the OAR a more powerful tool for disclosure, data standardization, and optimized searches.

After nine months of individual and group consultation with stakeholders across the apparel sector, as well as a public comment period, five data points were chosen to be added to the Open Apparel Registry:

  • Number of workers (Transparency Pledge requirement)

  • Parent Company (Transparency Pledge requirement)

  • Type of Product (Transparency Pledge requirement)

  • Type of Facility

  • Type of Processing

These data points were selected to allow contributing organizations to fulfill growing transparency requirements by uploading to the OAR, while simultaneously building a richer dataset for users to search and download.

You are now able to contribute and search by these five data points on the Open Apparel Registry.

There are already 20+ facility lists on the OAR with at least one of these data points included* and, as an open data platform, the number of facility profiles with these data points will grow as more Contributors add and update their data on the platform.

*As of launch in March 2022

How it Works:

Any organization connected to a facility can contribute data points about that facility to the OAR. Once additional data points have been contributed about a facility, they will display on the facility profile, alongside the name of the Contributor and the date of that contribution. Users will be able to see and download all of the contributions made for a facility data point. Contributions are ordered on facility profiles based on:

  1. Whether data is contributed by a senior owner/manager of a facility through a facility claim

  2. How frequently the value has been submitted

  3. Date of contribution (newest to oldest)

Data Point Highlights:

You can view a full table outlining how each data point is contributed, processed, searched and displayed in the OAR. Here are the most important highlights about each data point:

Parent Company and Type of Product will not go through additional processing/cleaning when uploaded. Users will be able to search and receive results based on the raw data provided by Contributors.

Parent Company:

  • Definition: the company or manufacturing group which owns the facility

Type of Product:

  • Definition: the product(s) which the facility produces

  • What can users contribute? Any product type(s) the Contributor has confirmed can be sourced from the facility.

Number of Workers, Type of Processing and Type of Facility have additional processing steps to allow for more powerful and standardized searching.

Number of Workers:

  • Definition: the number of workers who work at a facility

  • What can users contribute? Raw values or ranges

  • What can users search? All contributions will be processed into searchable categories (selected to align with the Transparency Pledge):
    • Less than 1000

    • 1001 - 5000

    • 5001 - 10,000

    • More than 10,000

  • What can users download? When you download data from the OAR, you will receive the raw values submitted by Contributors.

Type of Processing and Type of Facility:

Contributors upload all processing and/or facility types to the OAR in a single field. The OAR then processes those values into a set of searchable facility types based on this Facility Type Taxonomy.* The searchable facility type categories are:

  • Raw Material Processing or Production

  • Textile or Material Production

  • Printing, Product Dyeing and Laundering

  • Final Product Assembly

  • Warehousing / Distribution

  • Office / HQ

Type of Processing:

  • Definition: the most frequent activities or processes which occur at the facility

  • What can users contribute? Any processing activities the Contributor has confirmed occurs at the facility

  • What can users search? Users will be able to search the raw values submitted for processing type(s)

  • What can users download? Users will be able to download the raw values submitted for processing type(s)

Type of Facility:

  • Definition: standardized facility types outlined in the Facility Type Taxonomy to best capture a facility's function

  • What can users search? When Contributors upload a list of processing types/activities to the OAR, those activities are run through the Facility Type Taxonomy. If processing types match values in the taxonomy, the facility profile will be tagged with the corresponding facility type(s) in the taxonomy. Users will then be able to search by the facility type categories listed in the taxonomy. If processing types do not match values in the Facility Type Taxonomy, a facility type will not be generated for that contribution.

  • What can users download? When you download data from the OAR, you will receive both the raw values submitted by Contributors and the processed Facility Type categories.

*The OAR Facility Type Taxonomy was developed in consultation with stakeholders from across the apparel sector.
